Pokken Tournament is not just going to be an arcade brawler. As part of Pokemon20, Pokken Tournament on the Wii U will be happening later this year. A little bit ago, Mark Julio tweeted about the best way to play the game competitively on the Wii U.
For anyone who does not know what Pokken Tournament is, it is basically a fighting game like Tekken or Street Fighter, but with Pokemon fighting other Pokemon. Of course there are many differences, like the use of field stages and duel phases, support only characters, and more covered more in depth here.
Some of you may remember the Pokken Tournament arcade game being trialed at Dave and Busters, but now it's coming to home consoles. Mark Julio, a respected leader of the fighting game community, talked about the optimal way to play Pokken Tournament on the Wii U. What he said was that the best way would be with a LAN connection and two Wii U consoles. The game does support LAN, and that will help the game run with less lag, because both Wii U’s will be handle the stress load locally.
He explains that this is because the game’s perspective follows the player as they move their Pokemon around the stage, whereas two players on the same screen would need more of a fixed perspective to fight with. This can be accomplished using the Wii U gamepad for one player and the TV screen for the other, but he reasons that the only truly fair way to play Pokken Tournament on the Wii U would be with two consoles.
This release is part of the Pokemon 20th anniversary celebration, since the original Pokemon games released in Japan in 1996. Another way Nintendo is celebrating Pokemon20 is by giving away 11 legendary Pokemon for free. The full list is here. In four days, the extremely rare Pokemon mew will be available at participating GameStop locations. Once there you can download a code to your 3DS to unlock Mew in your copy of Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, Pokemon X, or Pokemon Y.

The Nintendo website says, “Kick off the Pokémon 20th celebration with the Mythical Pokémon Mew! Mew was the first Mythical Pokémon to be discovered—obtained in the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue games. Mew now returns in much the same way as it appeared for players nearly 20 years ago. Don’t miss this chance to get the very first Mythical Pokémon once again!” Pokken Tournament on the Wii U is being released on March 18, 2016. There are also just four more days until Pokemon players can obtain mew. Nintendo has made sure that the 20th anniversary of Pokemon has plenty of stuff ready for fans.
